oodcuts are a great resource for finding information regarding life during the 16th century. Unlike illustrations or paintings, a woodcut can be copied multiple times, increasing the likelihood that the image depicted will survive to modern times. It is the medium that most commonly depicts the common peasant or civilian. Also, the artists that carved each woodcut were meticulous in their depiction of reality. During the Renaissance, the artist's goal was to illustrate life as close to reality as possible and that makes the resulting imagery great source material for reverse engineering clothing patters, analyzing weapon designs, and picking apart every day life of the time period.
Just like any other art form, the artists who carved the woodcuts were prone to misrepresenting something or illustrating a complete work of fiction. That is why it is important to take in the woodcuts as a whole and not individually and to cross reference what is found in the woodcuts with paintings and other surviving imagery.
