SAINT MAXIMILIAN LANDSKNECHT REENACTMENT GUILD

ABOUT the GUILD

Saint Maximilian P eople often ask who Saint Maximilian was and why our organization is named after him. It is the tradition of Renaissance Fair guilds to name themselves after a patron saint much like the guilds of tradesmen did during the time period we recreate.

Saint Maximilian of Lorch BM (AC) Born at Novicum; died at Cilli, Styria, Austria, 284. Bishop Saint Maximilian had founded the church of Lorch near Passau, Germany, and became its bishop. He was martyred under Numerian in Styria. Saint Rupert built several churches in honor of Saint Maximilian (Benedictines, Encyclopedia). He is portrayed as a bishop holding a sword. Venerated at Lorch and Salzburg, Austria (Roeder)." Maximilian I, who created the Landsknechts, was named after this martyr, and thus the reason we chose him to be the patron saint and name for our guild.
