SAINT MAXIMILIAN LANDSKNECHT REENACTMENT GUILD

MUSTERING

Y ou want to interact with das Todesengel Fähnlein. Whether you are a member of another guild or are simply visiting a Renaissance Fair in your plain clothes and come across our encampment, there are many ways you can have fun with us. Below are some precautions you might want to keep in mind as you plan your visit.

Fence Line

There are two reasons a perimeter has been established around our encampment. First and foremost, it is a safety issue. Tent spikes and ropes can be dangerous to someone who is not paying attention, to say nothing of the weapons within. Secondly, as a guild, we try to create a diorama where people can view a slice of what Landsknechte from 1536 would look like. Having outsiders within the encampment can cripple the illusion. Not wanting to scare people away and not wanting to be uninviting, there are many ways we can interact while maintaining safety and the diorama.
  • If you wish to speak to us, simply walk up to the encampment and whoever is on guard duty will be happy to answer any questions you have. If you want to speak to somebody specifically, the guard will summon that person to the fence line and you can have your conversation there. A rope perimeter is not a wall and one can easily talk over it and exchange items over it.

  • Visitors are interested in holding many of the items we have within the encampment. If you are interested in handling a sword, spear, or any other object, simply ask whoever is on guard and it can easily be passed over the ropes for your inspection.

  • During various hours of the day, fencing lessons are offered to children. We will invite them to enter the encampment and lead them to a safe spot specifically designated for the purpose of swordplay.

  • Should you be planning a scripted event (often times referred to as a "gig") or if you want to have a private conversation, you can ask to be invited inside the encampment. While within the encampment, we ask that you discuss your business toward the back of camp.

  • Similar to the previous statement, if you want to talk about modern topics or any issue that would cause one to break character, we ask that you take it toward the back of the encampment where modern English can not be heard by others.

  • We are happy to open our encampment to be the stage of a gig you might be planning. If you want to raid our camp in a giant brawl, kidnap our feldweibel, and steal some Landsknechte loot, let us know ahead of time so we can script the event. Similarly, we can raid your camp, kidnap your leader, and bring him/her back to our camp and make a public display of our prisoner. These theatrical showcases reinforce the aura we want to present to the crowd.

Distinction of Class

Class structures were black-and-white during 1536. Despite wearing what appears to modern eyes as being the clothes of royalty, the Landsknechte of das Todesengel Fähnlein are definitely not royalty. Originating from the peasant class, we are soldiers who purchased our garb after earning our pay in battle. Having been peasants, we would not belong co-mingling with nobles. Being mercenaries, that's all the more reason to be despised.

These points are not to limit interactions between people; rather, they are to here to help us stay true to our personas.
  • Should you be a visitor to the Renaissance Fair, the Landsknechte would be of the same class, so you can talk to us all you want. In fact, we welcome it. However, as we march or escort royalty around fair, you should heed our commands since they are for the safety of everyone involved.

  • If you play a character of nobility, there is a very good chance that you would never speak directly to a speißtrager, doppelsoldat, or kampfrau. You would want speak to an officer such as our feldweibel or send a messenger. The rest of us are dirt in your eyes.

  • Since character rank does not reflect rank within the guild, there are times when we need to break character. In these cases, simply relocate the conversation to the back of the camp or make up a theatrical reason that the person of rank would speak to the lower class person.

  • At some fairs, there is some sort of theatrical conflict going on and certain guilds are put on one side or another. The fair organizers try hard to convey that story, so keep in mind what guilds are allies or adversaries, since that would impact our interactions.
